Nine Sailors Net against Visiting Downey
Newport Harbor 14
Vikings vs. Sailors is a classic matchup dating back thousands of years—an unceasing battle for dominion over the high seas. On Thursday, the Sailors claimed victory in the latest installment. After falling behind 3-0 early, Downey righted the ship and held strong, eventually answering with a goal off a strong transition drive to the cage. But the two-goal deficit was the closest the Vikings would come to NHHS for the rest of the evening. For Newport, Katie Hendrix scored three goals on four sweet shots, earned an assist, and won two draw controls—and she did it all without a foul. Great lacrosse! The Sailor defense, captained by Mia Bagiu, held Downey to only 33% shooting. Nine different Sailors contributed goals in the effort.
Powerful Start-NHHS vs. Downey
Newport Harbor 7
After weeks of workouts and practice, it was time to showcase our talent in the 2015 season opener vs. Downey High School. Newport Harbor comes out of the gate strong scoring a handful of goals in the first ten minutes. Our attack came to play with Colby Schmidlin scoring NH first goal of the day and Sarah Spence following up with two goals herself putting the Sailors up three with 16 minutes still to play in the half. As the game progressed we were able to get the entire team the playing time they deserve. As some of the new players take the field, NH continues to play hard maintaining possession and playing awesome lacrosse leading to more goals by Laura Tran our draw specialist, Heather Roberts, and Taylor Long. Our win over Downey was a good team win with many awesome assists and every girl successfully playing their part.
