Mission Viejo Comes Back Against Newport Harbor

Newport Harbor 7
Mission Viejo 12

Newport Harbor had their St. Patty’s socks on, but the luck of the Irish would not be on their side as the Diablos overcame a halftime deficit to take down the home team—and avenge their Rose Bowl championship game loss.  The Sailors controlled the first half of the game, despite giving up an early goal to Mission Viejo’s Maryn Macha, who would lead her team with two goals and an assist.  Junior captain Rylie Siegfried answered with an immediate goal off of a signature one-hand-stretch draw control, a solo stampede to cage, and an unstoppable shot.  A strong defensive effort earned the Sailors a 5-3 halftime lead.  Senior captain Daniela Vazquez earned player of the game as she broke out with a three goals (two off of great transition drives), an assist, and three ground ball controls.  But her efforts were not enough for the Sailors; the Diablos made their adjustments and came out strong in the second half.  Not only did they net nine goals, they also held Newport scoreless in the final 12:35 of the game.

As the Sailors come off a week with high intensity practices, the girls of NHHS lacrosse are ready to redeem themselves against Mission Viejo. The Sailors entered the game with tons of emotion ready for a win. With Laura Tran and Lysie Kenney dominating the draws, Newport came out scoring early into the first half after a nice long possession. As the game progressed stress free, we entered half time with a lead of 6-2. Jessica woodruff ended the game with three goals playing a huge factor in our win at the midfield position. It was a solid team effort with other strong performances from both goalies Sophia Martinez and Hannah Sanders. It’s fair to say that Charlie Sandy and Oriana Rousseau stood out on defense collecting a handful of ground balls each. These dominant games are great because we are able to rotate our roster and let the entire team get some action against the opponent.
