Newport Harbor Takes Down Yorba Linda

Newport Harbor 12
Yorba Linda 5

The Sailors came into the evening looking to maintain their undefeated league record against Yorba Linda, and they left Davidson field with the victory.  Yorba Linda confounded the home team in the first half with a strong zone defense that the Tars had trouble penetrating; when they did, Mustang goalie Brooke Torres was often able to answer the challenge.  Behind junior midfielder Julia Stinnett, who had two goals in the first half and would finish with three, Yorba Linda kept the game close and trailed by only one at halftime, 4-3.  But the second half was all Sailors, as the offense found the soft spots in the Mustang zone and attacked relentlessly.  Daniela Vazquez led the charge with a season-high four goals; and Sammy Whitney came off the bench, slipped into the seams of the zone, and finished strong by netting three pretty goals.  On the defensive end, the Sailors held strong for long stretches of scoreless play.  Pressure from starters Mia Bagiu, Erin O’Connor, Jordan Rausch, and Sophia Riggan would not allow the Mustangs to establish any offensive rhythm, and the defenders scooped every loose ball within range of their sticks.  Goalie Montana Mattox made seven saves (58%).  On the night, seven different Sailors scored and a six fed for assists.

As the Sailors come off a weekend full of victories, it was time to focus on the task at hand, Yorba Linda. With positive spirits and tons of confidence the girls own the first half of play.  Coming out of the gate with all of the possession time, Newport racked up a whopping 9 points going into halftime. No matter our competition this teams plays great together sharing the love, letting everyone get an attempt at scoring. With too many names to mention, the Sailors put points on the board at will. At the start of the second half Yorba Linda showed a second wind owning the ground balls and possession time. This led to a beautiful goal early in the half. It was only a matter of time before Newport Harbor regained focus and never looked back. Yorba Linda fought until the last whistle but the effort wasn’t enough. Although it was a lopsided game both teams showed great sportsmanship the entire game. The Sailors finished on top!
