Newport Edged Out by Trabuco in a Free Position Battle
Newport Harbor christened its home-away-from-home at Estancia high school against rival Trabuco Hills on Friday. Over the last two years, Trabuco has squeaked by Newport by an average of two goals, and Friday¹s game followed the trend. Trabuco jumped out to an early lead as a defensive miscue allowed their star, Kendall Derbyshire, unfettered access to the cage.
Senior Sailor goalie, Hannah Sanders, answered with a few impressive saves off of tough free position shots, and then suffered a phantom goal that gave Trabuco the 2-0 lead.
NHHS burned a timeout to settle back into the game and came back as junior captain Katie Hendrix netted a wicked free position shot, which was answered by two Mustang free positions that gave the visitors a 4-1 lead. Senior captain Rylie Siegfried took the matter into her own hands and drove hard through three crashing defenders to score her first of three goals on the evening. Hendrix ripped another free position shot to bring Newport to within one goal of Trabuco, which was again answered by a free position from the visiting team. Junior middie Sarah Farley made a 40-yard drive through a host of Trabuco defenders to bring the score back to within one goal, 5-4.
Although Sanders made a number of outrageous saves to keep the Sailors in the game, Trabuco finished the half strong with two goals, including a fast break score with only two seconds remaining.
The second half was a low-scoring affair, as Newport¹s defensive corps (anchored by seniors Jordan Rausch, Sophia Riggan, and Maxine Aiello) stepped up for some big-time team-D. Behind two goals from Siegfried‹one off a mad-dog drive from a beautiful assist by a dodging Hendrix‹Newport was able to win the half 2-1, but it was not enough, as Trabuco notched another victory, 8-6.
