GAME RECAP | 3/14 VS BECKMAN
Newport Harbor 6
Newport Harbor Comes Up Short in Thriller Against Beckman
In its second of three back-to-back games, Newport Harbor fought valiantly against Beckman, the 2015 Orange County runner-up. Beckman opened scoring with a nice feed to a slippery cutter, but the Sailors responded swiftly, with junior midfielder Sarah Farley slinging the first of her three goals in a breakout game. Immediately off the following draw, junior attacker Heather Roberts netted a fast break goal fed to her by senior captain Rylie Siegfried, who took down the draw. Farley made Beckman pay for an errant clearing pass with her second goal, and seven minutes into the game, the Sailors led the Patriots 3-1.
The home team regrouped and played their signature ball-control game, answering with three goals of their own to regain a one-goal lead, 4-3. With two and a half minutes remaining in the first half, Siegfried responded off a tight-quarter feed from junior captain Katie Hendrix. 4-4 was the halftime score.
The clock smoldered for fifteen minutes of a second-half defensive battle; the visiting defense, led by senior captain Jordan Rausch and goalie Hannah Sanders, held fast against extended Patriot possessions. With just under ten to play, Beckman converted a free position to take the 5-4 lead. Three minutes later, Farley answered with a pretty goal off a smart feed from Siegfried. The teams traded goals again, with Hendrix slinging a wicked free position shot past the Beckman goalie to tie the game 6-6. As the game wound down, Beckman earned a series of free position shots and ultimately converted with 1:40 left in the game. The Sailors fought hard to create a few chances in the final minute of the game, but the Patriot defense defended its keep, and won the 7-6 victory.
