Newport Earns League Title with 11-1 Win Over Yorba Linda
Newport Harbor had a lot to fight for on Thursday. Not only would a win lock in the team’s first outright league title in program history, but it would also be a fitting send-off to the senior class that built NHHS girls lacrosse into what it is today. As an injured Sophia Riggan cheered from the sidelines, seniors Maxine Aiello, Emily Lukosky, Nicole Newman, Jordan Rausch, Hannah Sanders, and Rylie Siegfried all took the “home” field for the last time—and then put on a show for their teary-eyed parents.
The Newport offense spent the first half methodically attacking the Yorba Linda’s signature zone. Junior captain Katie Hendrix fed the first of her three assists to posting classmate Sarah Farley for the opening score, and Siegfried embroidered her monogram on the game just moments later with a draw win straight to cage that netted what would become the game winner. Hendrix finished with two goals, three assists, three draws, two ground balls, and an interception; Farley scored two, made one assist, snagged a draw and two ground balls, and intercepted one; Siegfried scored two and took down seven draws. Yorba snuck a goal past the Newport defense late in the first to make a halftime score of 6-1.
Throughout the game, the Newport ride was murderous and the defense was relentless; the visiting Mustangs were unable to find any offensive rhythm. Sanders was forced to make only two saves (67%); Rausch scooped four ground balls and took away three; Aiello scooped three and earned three takeaways; junior Jill Rosten scooped three, intercepted one, and took one away. The goal of the game came late in the second, as Hendrix threw a 20-yard pass to junior Jessica Woodruff, who cut into the 8M from X, handled the pass with an acrobatic catch at her shoelaces, and wind-milled an overhand quick-stick (!) past the goalie. Adding to the Sailor scoreboard were sophomores Adena Rothbard (two goals, two ground balls) and Lysie Kenney (two goals), and junior Heather Roberts (one assist, game-high five ground balls).
