Game Recap – Mater Dei 05/06/14
Newport Harbor 2 – Mater Dei 10
Both Mater Dei and Newport Harbor exploded out of the gates in 2014. But while the Monarchs stayed hot virtually all season, the Sailors entered their first playoff game since 2011 after a very chilly April. The game opened with an immediate Mater Dei goal by Grace Houser, which was answered by Newport Harbor’s Daniela Vazquez on a free position a few minutes later. Houser responded with the next of her game-leading four first half goals, and while the underdogs were running with the Monarchs early in the game, the home team opened up with a flurry of goals at the mid-point of the period. The top seed posted an 8-1 first half lead. Newport Harbor made some effective defensive adjustments, and Vazquez was able to net a second goal, but they were unable to finish the plays that would have brought them back into contention. Mater Dei earned the comfortable 10-2 victory.
