JV Takes Down TESORO

3/13/18: 10-7 Win Against The Tesoro Titans: At the very beginning of the game, Megan Baldwin scooped up a ground ball and ran to set up on the eight meter against the Tesoro crashing defense. A wild pass flew behind the goal, but Abby Sweetser gathered it up before it went out of bounds, and then she outran her defender, and slammed the ball into the goal! Later in the first half, Chloe Parsel rolled around the crease to rocket the ball into the goal. Right after, Birthday Girl Abby Sweetser shot the ball into the bottom left of the goal for her second goal of the game. And finally with 30 seconds left in the first half, Ava Matsunami made a brilliant assist pass to Alexis Lozano, who shot and scored, which gave Harbor a 4-3 Lead.

In the 2nd Half, attacker Maile Burns wrapped around the crease and scored twice and Kirsten Odum added a pretty goal with a shot that went straight between the legs of Tesoro’s goalie! Megan Baldwin, sprinted down the field as a Middy and found the back of the goal twice! With 52 seconds left in the game, Kirsten Odum iced the game for the Sailors with a crazy hard shot! Tessa Chapman stood tall and made some great saves, and Newport Harbor JV won the game 10-7!

JV Battles San Juan Hills

3/8/18: 12-2 Loss SJH: JV started strong from the opening whistle, with a draw control by Abby Sweetser. A rapid pace to the game saw back-and-forth action between both teams, which captured the attention of everyone watching, and left everyone hanging on the edge of their seats. Within the first ten minutes, Mary Jones bolted straight forward to scoop up a ground ball, running all the way down the field, and keeping control of the ball, even as she was attacked on all sides by three girls. Gracefully cradling, she rushed through the eight meter and scored, the ball flying straight past the goalie and into the back of the net.

In the second half, even though the mid-field was struggling a bit on the draw, the defense kept the team going and was on fire! Kylie Howard and Nicole Bowen worked together to cause at least three turnovers and successfully won possessions and got the ball back to the attack. As a result, attacker Hannah Martinez got possession of a ball behind the goal and executed a strong crease roll to score the Sailor’s second goal of the game! In the end, SJH came away with a 12-2 victory, but the team had a great experience, and everyone was happy with the strong effort of the team. Goalie Reynah Carter made some AMAZING saves throughout the entire game!

Varsity Game Recap 19-2 Win over Great Oak on 3/1/18

3/1/18: GREAT OAK GAME: Varsity came out of the gates strong on attack and ended up with a lopsided 19-2 victory in the home opener. An offensive explosion by Caroline Farley, ended up in 7 goals, and 2 assists. Adena Rothbard tossed in 3 on a perfect 3/3 shooting outing. Lysie Kenney, Mariana Miller, and Kobe Richardson all hit the back of the net twice, Joelle Rothbard got her first 2 goals as a Sailor, and Zoey Palmquist stepped up in some midfield action to throw in her first of the year as well. Willa Rath held the crease sturdy and only let 2 balls by her all night. She had plenty of defensive support in front of her, anchored by standout junior Elise Skytte, and the sophomore tandem of Zoey Palmquist and Paris Kozlowski. Delaney Knipp had another strong performance as well, and ended up the night with 3 assists and a handful of groundballs and draw controls.

JV RECAP versus GREAT OAK on 3/1/18

3/3/18: GREAT OAK 8-7 LOSS: In the home opener, the Sailors came out swinging, but the visiting Wolfpack still managed to post a 4-2 lead at halftime. Newport came charging back with goals by Lily Anderson and Kirsten Odum, which knotted up the score at 4 a piece about halfway through the 2nd half. Great Oak managed to forge back ahead with a streak of 3 goals in a row, before the Sailors ended that run with back to back goals of their own, as Megan Baldwin connected with a laser shot past the Great Oak Goalie to make it a one goal game again at 7-6. Another Wolfpack tally with about 5 minutes left made it 8-6, but Newport answered with an immediate response as Kirsten Odum put in her third of the game, and it was again a one goal game with less then 2 minutes remaining. Great Oak managed to win the draw and ran the clock out for a very narrow escape.
