Newport Harbor Handles Temecula Valley

Newport Harbor – 14
Temecula Valley – 4

April 20, Costa Mesa – The Sailors jumped out to an early lead Thursday against Temecula and never looked back.  Senior attacker Heather Roberts opened scoring in the first minute with a strong crease roll.  Seniors Sarah Farley and Jessica Woodruff struck again for the Sailors, and in just over three minutes, the hosting Tars were up by three.  The Sailor ride forced the visitors to earn every inch of ground, and while the Golden Bears were able to get to the cage, sophomore Jade Rettig in the Newport goal was up to the challenge; she finished the first half with seven saves on eight shots.  TVHS was able to end the shutout with a goal from senior Makayla Munoz, assisted by senior Samra Cain

With Woodruff adding one more off a pretty feed from senior Katie Hendrix, Senior Laura Tran converting a beautiful free position, and freshman Caroline Farley netting a transition goal, the Sailors earned a cushy 7-1 halftime lead.

In the second half, the NHHS ride clamped down even harder, and the defensive unit of seniors Hayden Allen, Jill Rosten, and Amber Skytte, and sophomores Elise Skytte, Delaney Knipp, and Ella Kenney went into beast mode.  Yet despite earning only six shots on goal, Temecula sophomores Holly Olvera and Jade West scored three.  But the Sailor attack, led by a second half hat trick from sophomore Mariana Miller, overpowered the Bears and ensured the ten-goal victory.

Farley senior dominated the stat sheet with four goals, four ground balls, three draw controls, and five caused turnovers.  Hendrix added a goal on a nimble free position drive and finished with two assists, three ground balls, and two draw controls.  Tran also put one away for the Sailors to add to her three draw controls, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers.  Allen led the Sailors with five ground balls—a number of which were on gritty defensive plays.  Rettig finished with eleven saves (73.3%).

Sailors Gang Up on the Wolfpack: Temecula March 28th

Newport Harbor – 13
Great Oak – 4

Temecula, March 28 – Six different players ripped the rope for Newport Harbor in Tuesday’s game. Over the first twenty-four minutes, Great Oak had no answer as the visiting Tars built an eight-goal lead. The Newport ride was in full effect, forcing the hosting Wolfpack to work overtime through the midfield and causing a number of turnovers–including a few exceptional blocks and interceptions from senior captains Katie Hendrix and Sarah Farley.

Great Oak ended the shutout with a nice dodge and shot from Sydney Simpson in the last minute of the half.  Newport added one more in the last second to earn the 10-1 halftime lead.

While the hosting Wolfpack was able to mount a more potent offense in the second half and goalie Ashley Fejerang heated up with some monster saves on the relentless Newport attack, it was not enough as the Sailors held tight to their nine-goal lead and finished the game strong.

For NHHS, junior Lysie Kenney scored one off a great high-to-low assist from junior Adena Rothbard, who also put one on the board from a nice re-attack; Farley finished with two, along with four draw controls and four caused turnovers; freshman Caroline Farley, and senior Laura Tran each earned hat tricks, with Tran adding an assist to boot. Hendrix also pounded the cage for a hat trick and added four ground balls to her tally.
