Game Recap – Foothill 04/08/14

VARSITY
Newport Harbor 4 – Foothill 14

NHHS and FHS were both undefeated in league play coming into the game. The Sailors fought hard, but the Knights showed why they are ranked #1. From the opening whistle, Foothill controlled the game, earning the 14-4 victory. For Newport Harbor, Daniela Vazquez found the back of the cage three times, but the Foothill onslaught was unrelenting. Ten different Knights made their way into the scorebook with goals and/or assists. Leading the way were Mallery Kiefus and Claire Healy with three goals apiece; Dominique Lee booked two goals and an assist; and goalie Hannah Upshaw recorded nine saves (69%).

Game Recap – Esperanza 04/03/14

VARSITY
Newport Harbor 6 – Esperanza 4

Newport once again opened with three goals in the opening minutes, but Esperanza stemmed the tide and went into halftime down 4-2. The second half was an even matchup, but despite a two-goal effort from Esperanza’s top attacker, Elly Mosher, the Aztecs were never able to overcome the early deficit, and the game ended 6-4. Assisted by the outstanding efforts of her defensive corps, Sailor goalie Cailynn Smethurst stepped up big, with twelve saves (75%). Rylie Siegfried continued her physical dominance up and down the field, earning top marks in all the non-quantifiables: hustle, will, poise, and game IQ. Kim Comet and Alex Palmer led scoring with two goals apiece. With the victory, NHHS posts the second ten-win season in program history.

Game Recap – Yorba Linda 04/02/14

VARSITY
Newport Harbor 12 – Yorba Linda 11

Newport charged out of the gates with three goals in five minutes, but Yorba rallied back immediately, scoring four in the next ten. After a 5-5 halftime, the teams exchanged blows for another 25 minutes. At the horn, the Sailors were the team on top, 12-11. The Mustangs’ senior captain Ashlynn Braithwaite performed phenomenally, adding six goals and an assist to her season total eleven points against NHHS. But Daniela Vazquez and Alex Palmer gave the edge to the Tars. Vazquez scored three clutch goals in the second half, two of which gave her visiting Sailors temporary leads; she finished the game with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Palmer added her two cents in the form of four goals, five ground balls, a draw control, and two forced turnovers.

Game Recap – El Dorado 04/01/14

VARSITY
Newport Harbor 6 – El Dorado 5

It was a back-and-forth battle between EDHS and NHHS, with the Tars edging the home team in overtime, 6-5. El Dorado fell behind 2-0 in the early part of the game, but took Newport Harbor into halftime with a tie score, 2-2. The second half see-sawed, and regulation play was not enough. Each goalie performed brilliantly: The Hawks’ Sofie Naumovski saved 14 (70%), while Newport’s Cailynn Smethurst saved 10 (67%). Megan Lines scored the go-ahead for El Dorado late in the second half, but Alex Palmer tied the game just a minute later with one of her two goals on the night. In overtime, Kim Comet buried the game-winner for the Sailors off a signature pure-speed transition drive, and this after opening the game with a goal nearly fifty minutes earlier. The Sailor defense, anchored by Jenna Nulty, Mia Bagiu, Katelyn Gallegos, and Montana Mattox, stood stout against the patient El Dorado attack.
