Sticks & Stones JV Tournament Recap

STICKS & STONES 03-29-14NEWPORT HARBOR JV – STICKS & STONES 2014 CHAMPIONS

On a warm sunny day in Mission Viejo, the JV Sailor Girls dominated their bracket at the annual Sticks & Stones Tournament and came home Champions. It was truly a team effort and some very tired girls that pulled off a great win in the Championship Game after a three hour wait to retake the field. The coaches did a great job keeping the girls loose, engaged and focused.

Newport Harbor 10 – El Toro 1 (Game 1)
In the opening game of the tournament, the Sailor Girls handily defeated El Toro by a score of 10-1. With crisp passing, good goal shooting and excellent defense, El Toro was held to just one goal on five shots. Sarah Farley led the scoring with four goals, followed by Sara Spence and Colby Schmidlin who both had two goals. Nicole Newman and Marissa Cislaw each contributed a goal each for the double digit win. Jessica Woodruff and Corinne Reuter had excellent assists on two of the goals. Bridget Nolan had a great game on defense with four ground controls and a caused turnover. Natalie Valente and Jordan Kaufman also had very strong defensive efforts both contributing with caused turnovers and ground ball control.

Game Recap – Valenica 03/27/14

VARSITY
Newport Harbor 8 – Valencia 5

Valencia fought hard against Newport Harbor and gave the home team a scare. Behind Jenna Fogliasso who posted two goals in the last minute of the first half, the visitors rallied to within one at halftime. And though the Tiger defense held the Sailors to five fewer goals than they had scored in the previous matchup, the second half belonged to the Sailors, who took the win, 8-5. For the Sailors, sophomore midfielder Rylie Siegfried was a bull on the ride, and pulled off another great game against the Tigers, snagging an astounding five draw controls and two ground balls; she added two caused turnovers and a goal for the complete game. Senior captain Cailynn Smethurst kicked and caught ten Valencia shots (67%). Junior attacker Daniela Vazquez added her signature game-winner, and added an insurance goal for good measure, tying senior captain Alex Palmer for the scoring lead with two. Senior exchange student Birgit Drevvatne netted the first of her varsity career.

Game Recap – Yorba Linda 03/25/14

VARSITY
Newport Harbor 9 – Yorba Linda 5

The fans came out in droves for the NHHS “Game of the Month,” and the Sailors did not disappoint as they defeated league opponent Yorba Linda, 9-5. For the home team, Alex Palmer did her best Alex Palmer impression, scoring five goals, causing two turnovers, digging up two ground balls, and snagging a draw control. But it was the Newport Harbor defense that stole the show, holding the Mustangs potent 12-goal-a-game offense to a meager 5. Still, for Yorba Linda, superstar midfielder Ashlynn Braithwaite was able to park 3 balls in the back of the net. But the crew of Sailor defenders, led by senior captain Jenna Nulty, battened down the hatches to YLHS. Mia Bagiu, Allana Rockwell, Montana Mattox, and Katelyn Gallegos showed strong for the rowdy Newport fans.

SPIRIT RUN

Players and Parents,

Thank you for setting those Sunday alarms and coming out for the NMUSD Spirit Run. NHHS Girls Lacrosse made a strong showing under the gray sky in our new gray t-shirts—thanks to The Agency Realty and Troy Davis. As the racers assembled, we let out an “N-H-L-A-X” cheer and when the horn blew we hit the ground running. Some of the luckier players shared a high-five with Ensign VP Bob Nanney, while others were welcomed at the finish line by Principal Boulton (who ran the course in under 27 minutes).

Individual race results are not yet posted, but when they are, we will send a link.

The Spirit Run Pledge drive was a huge success, too. We set a team goal of $5,200, and as of Sunday afternoon we’ve raised more than $5,400. The top five player fundraisers are Corinne Reuter, Ingrid Wentzel, Jenna Nulty, Sammy Whitney, and Rylie Siegfried. Together, these five raised over $2,400! Thank you for your great work!
