Game Recap – Yorba Linda 03/25/14

VARSITY
Newport Harbor 9 – Yorba Linda 5

The fans came out in droves for the NHHS “Game of the Month,” and the Sailors did not disappoint as they defeated league opponent Yorba Linda, 9-5. For the home team, Alex Palmer did her best Alex Palmer impression, scoring five goals, causing two turnovers, digging up two ground balls, and snagging a draw control. But it was the Newport Harbor defense that stole the show, holding the Mustangs potent 12-goal-a-game offense to a meager 5. Still, for Yorba Linda, superstar midfielder Ashlynn Braithwaite was able to park 3 balls in the back of the net. But the crew of Sailor defenders, led by senior captain Jenna Nulty, battened down the hatches to YLHS. Mia Bagiu, Allana Rockwell, Montana Mattox, and Katelyn Gallegos showed strong for the rowdy Newport fans.

SPIRIT RUN

Players and Parents,

Thank you for setting those Sunday alarms and coming out for the NMUSD Spirit Run. NHHS Girls Lacrosse made a strong showing under the gray sky in our new gray t-shirts—thanks to The Agency Realty and Troy Davis. As the racers assembled, we let out an “N-H-L-A-X” cheer and when the horn blew we hit the ground running. Some of the luckier players shared a high-five with Ensign VP Bob Nanney, while others were welcomed at the finish line by Principal Boulton (who ran the course in under 27 minutes).

Individual race results are not yet posted, but when they are, we will send a link.

The Spirit Run Pledge drive was a huge success, too. We set a team goal of $5,200, and as of Sunday afternoon we’ve raised more than $5,400. The top five player fundraisers are Corinne Reuter, Ingrid Wentzel, Jenna Nulty, Sammy Whitney, and Rylie Siegfried. Together, these five raised over $2,400! Thank you for your great work!

Game Recap – Valencia 03/20/14

VARSITY
Newport Harbor 13 – Valencia 4

Valencia girls lacrosse opened the season with a 5-0 record, but Newport came off the bus strong and brought home the victory, 13-4. For the Sailors, sophomore midfielder Rylie Siegfried slashed through the arc to open scoring on two identical goals fed from junior attacker Kim Comet. The Tigers regrouped after falling behind 3-0 and followed Jenna Fogliasso into a goal-for-goal shootout with Newport, leaving a halftime score of 6-3. But the second half was all Sailor, as senior captain Alex Palmer took over, netting six goals, scooping three ground balls and a draw control, and causing four turnovers. Siegfried ended with three goals, freshman attacker Katie Hendrix broke the seal on her varsity career with two, and goalie Cailynn Smethurst acted the part of the wall, saving 12 shots (75%).

Game Recap – El Toro 03/17/14

VARSITY
Newport Harbor 9 – El Toro 8

Both El Toro and NHHS have been strong out of the gates. As expected, their St. Patrick’s Day meeting went down to the wire, with the Sailors ending up on top, 9-8. Senior captain Cailynn Smethurst was in form between the pipes, saving 14 of 22 shots on goal (64%). In front of her, the Newport defense used its entire bench to deal with a Charger attack led by junior Emily Lackey, who finished with three goals and an assist. For the Sailors, six different sticks contributed, with three goals coming from Alex Palmer and two goals each from Daniela Vazquez, and Brittany McCoy.

JV
Newport Harbor 8 – El Toro 7

A very competitive game was played under the lights in Lake Forest on St. Patrick’s Day with the JV ladies coming out on top by one goal and improving their undefeated record to 5-0. The game was well played by both teams and was a nail biter until the final horn. Eight different Sailor’s scored, while Sophia Martinez had another strong game in goal with 8 saves. Defensively, the team was decent in draw control, ground ball control and especially caused turnovers. The girls take the field next on Thursday at Los Al.

Great work on the car wash! Special thanks to Katie Hendrix and Rylie Siegfried for their outstanding fundraising efforts. They’ve set the bar high. Who’s going to step up next?

LIBRARY COMPUTER LAB/SPIRIT RUN PLEDGE DRIVE – TUESDAY: The pledge drive is all online, and it is very simple. Be sure to have email addresses for about 15 relatives and non-local friends of the family. Try to think of anyone who would be willing and able to donate $10 to your 5K run. If you have more than 15, that’s great; the more folks you ask to pledge, the more likely you will be to earn more sponsorships. Those who would like to get a workout in after the pledge drive (wall-ball, stick-work, fitness), plan to stay from 3:30-4:30.

SPIRIT RUN – SUNDAY: NHHS Girls Lacrosse will run the Newport Harbor Spirit Run 5K. The race begins at 8:15 AM. All players should report to the check-in area at 7:45. You can pick up your bib and chip ahead of time at Whole Foods Fashion Island and receive a swag bag; otherwise, you can get your bib and chip at the check-in area at 7:45 on the morning of the race. We will be done with the race by 9:00 AM. We will do a final huddle at the end of the race, at which point players will be free to go. Any player having trouble finding a ride to and from the event can speak with Coach Armstrong. Please wear your NHHS Girls Lacrosse gray t-shirt provided by The Agency Realty.
