Game Recap – Laguna Hills 03/06/14

VARSITY
Newport Harbor 9 – Laguna Hills 7

Rallying behind junior midfielder Melody Lam, who booked five goals, and junior goalie Sarah Fuhrman, the Hawks threatened a late-game comeback, but the Sailors held strong to earn a 9-7 victory. For Newport Harbor, Kim Comet found her mojo, ripping two identical, bread-and-butter goals off sharp-angle crease rolls; she also scooped three draw controls and a ground ball. Senior defensive specialist Jenna Nulty not only snagged three ground balls, but also unleashed a left-handed shot for her first goal since freshman year.

Game Recap – Downey 03/04/14

VARSITY
Newport Harbor 6 – Downey 4

Led by senior captain Alex Palmer and her three goals, the NHHS Girls Lacrosse team defeated the Vikings 6-4 in the season opener. The victory earned the Sailors their first 1-0 start since 2009-the second in program history. A balanced and patient Downey attack pressed the Newport defense for the better part of the game, but senior captain Jenna Nulty along with defensive companions Mia Bagiu and Katelyn Gallegos held firm.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Alex Palmer

JV
Newport Harbor 7 – Downey 4

The Sailor Girls opened the season Tuesday afternoon with a victory over Downey, winning by a score of seven to four. Both teams played well defensively and spread the field nicely on offense, with the 1st half ending in a 3-3 tie.

Newport had 17 clears compared to 15 for Downey. Sarah Farley was impressive winning draw control five times while Sophia Riggan had a great defensive game causing three turnovers. The Sailor goalies were stingy, allowing only four goals on 8 shots.

Hannah Clark-Nixon, Sarah Farley and Caitlin Dwyer each scored twice, with Sarah Spence scoring the final goal of the game with 7.4 seconds remaining on a beautiful pass by Nicole Newman.
